Our history

The Christian Book Centre has been in Southport for over 50 years. For a large proportion of those years it was owned by Mr Geoffrey Ellis. Mr Ellis devoted many years to encouraging people to read Chrisitan books. He built up a huge network of bookstalls in Churches around the North West and as a result many people who did not live near a bookshop would be still be able to be encouraged and challenged by Christian literature. When Mr Ellis retired in 2001 Cuan Arch who had worked in the shop for a number of years took on the ownership of the bookshop and now runs it with his wife Laura.

Our mission

We see our work in the bookshop as a ministry. We believe that Christian books can and will challenge and inspire people. They are essential in our spiritual journey to help us in our walk with our Lord and Saviour. We believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God, it is His word and is all true. It is therefore a great privilege to be able to put the Bible into the hands of people. If someone asks us to recomend a gift for a special occasion we would always suggest a Bible above anything else.

We are a Christian presence in the High Street, a place where people can go and escape the frantic pace of the high street. We are privileged to have the opportuntiy to pray with and for people in the shop as well as being a listening ear to those who need it. Some people who walk into our shop are searching for something in their lives but are not sure what. We are able to share with them something of the love God has for them, we are able to recommend a local church we feel might be right for them, where they will be assured of a warm welcome. Whenever we can we give them a Bible to start them off on their journey. What an honour that is to be able to give someone a Bible, to pray with them and share the Gospel with them.

Please pray for us in our mission that we will take every opportunity we can to share the Gospel. Please pray that God will use us for His will and His purpose. Please pray that despite the difficult economy we will be able to remain on the High Street and continue the work God has called us to do. We are all here by His wonderful Grace, what a mighty God we serve.

Where are we?

We are situated in Wesley Street in Southport. Wesley Street runs parallel with Chapel Street the main shopping street that houses Marks and Spencers and Woolworths. Please see the map below.

Southport is a lovely Victorian seaside resort. It has many attractions for visitors and is a great place for a day out. There is the historic shopping street Lord Street, a pier, wonderful parks and a great many excellent eating places. Come and visit us in Southport, you will have a great day out and we would love to see you!
