Thought for the week

Colossians ch 4 v 2

'Devote yourselves to prayer being watchful and thankful.'

We are living in very difficult times, the credit crunch is affecting us all and the newspapers are filled with desperate situations, watching the news or reading the newspaper has become a heart wrenching, upsetting activity. We have always had bad news but now there never seems to be any good news. Every customer who comes into our shop is full of woe and worry. How do we as Christians respond to what is happening around us? Someone said to me yesterday that if we have been striving to be more Christ like, with our focus on God, doing the work he has called for us to do then we should be unaffected by the credit crunch! But we do live in the world and we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. We are all guilty of filling our lives with things we don't need and building up treasure here on earth.

So what should we be doing as Christians in response to these difficult times? Paul has the answer for us and it is so easy to do. 'Devote ourselves to prayer being watchful and thankful'. We need to have a real devotion to prayer, not a lip service or words said quickly in a free couple of minutes. When God's people pray amazing things happen. We should have a prayerful heart, an open communication with God as natural as breathing. A devotion to praying for our world, our neighbours, our families and ourselves. God is interested in every area of our lives, he wants us to bring all our worries including financial ones to Him. He will listen, He is able to work in any situation and He is bigger than any problem we may have. What a mighty God we serve.
